See Andy Warhol’s Pop Politics in Manchester, New Hampshireedited by Nan FrientAndy Warhol did for art in the 20th century what Michelangelo did in the 16th - he brought it to the people. As the pioneer of the Pop art movement he remains one of the most respected and controversial American artists. Andy Warhol: Pop Politics will be on display through January 4, 2009, a mere week and a half before President Bush leaves office. The exhibit offers a probing and entertaining look at the leaders who shaped the twentieth century through the eyes of Pop artist Andy Warhol.
Here, together for the first-time, are Warhol's paintings, prints, drawings and photographs of political figures. His portraits of American presidents and presidential candidates, foreign queens, Communist dictators and other political figures reveal intriguing, yet until now unexplored insights into Warhol's own celebrity status and political leanings. Warhol's images of these powerful personalities comment on the interrelationships between politics and celebrity culture in the late twentieth century – connections that remain ever present today.
